Introducing the Updated IT Essentials: PC Hardware and Software Course Print E-mail
The Cisco Networking Academy is pleased to announce an update to the popular PC Hardware and Software course in the IT Essentials curriculum. The updated course, PC Hardware and Software v4.0 covers new information, aligns with new certifications, and includes virtual learning tools to help students become familiar with the components of desktop and laptop computers.

Availability
The English version of PC Hardware and Software v4.0 has been released and all course materials are available for use on Academy Connection.

Certification Alignment
PC Hardware and Software v4.0 provides access to the knowledge and skills necessary for computer technicians and entry-level IT workers. Version 4.0 aligns with the new CompTIA A+ certification and modules 1-3 of the EUCIP IT Administrator certification, which is popular in Europe. PC Hardware and Software v4.0 has also been approved as a CompTIA Authorized Quality Curriculum.

Scope and Sequence
The Scope and Sequence document for the new version of PC Hardware and Software is attached. It provides detailed information about the topics that are covered in each chapter and updated equipment requirements.

Translation
Cisco’s goal is to support the translation of PC Hardware and Software to the greatest extent possible to meet instructor and student needs. The roadmap for course translations will be announced in the June-August 2007 timeframe.

Virtual Learning Tools
The PC Hardware and Software v4.0 curriculum introduces a set of virtual learning tools. The Virtual Laptop and Virtual Desktop are standalone tools designed to supplement classroom instruction and provide an interactive “hands-on” learning experience in environments with limited physical equipment. Hands-on labs will remain an essential element of the course.

The PC Hardware and Software overview presentation includes a tutorial on how to conduct the Virtual Laptop demonstration and highlights key features. The Virtual Laptop tool can be found at: http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/netacad/downloads/zip/laptop.zip

Equipment
As stated earlier, the course content has been revised to align with the new CompTIA A+ certification exam objectives, with an increased focus on practical job skills and troubleshooting skills. The updated equipment requirements for PC Hardware and Software v4.0 reflect these changes. The equipment requirements are provided in the Scope and Sequence document located in the Course Catalog on Academy Connection.

Instructor Training
For existing PC Hardware and Software instructors, training is optional but strongly recommended. Our goal is to offer a self-paced distance learning solution for current instructors to learn about the new technology content and pedagogy.

Current PC Hardware and Software instructors will be allowed to create and teach PC Hardware and Software v4.0 classes immediately.

New instructors will be required to successfully complete the PC Hardware and Software v4.0 instructor training. The options are five days of in-person training or a combination of in-person and remote instruction. An Instructor Fast Track option will also be available to new instructors with prior subject matter knowledge. This prior knowledge will be verified in one of the following ways:

    1. Specific industry certification
    2. Formal evidence of industry experience
    3. Formal evidence of teaching experience

A wide variety of materials will be available for instructor training, including Interactive Course Guides, Instructor Reference Guides, PowerPoint presentations, lab materials, and activities. The following types of instructor training will be available: in-person, remote, and independent learning. Independent or self-paced learning will only be available for existing instructors who choose to pursue re-training upon the initial rollout of the new curriculum.

For additional information, please review the resources in the Course Catalog on Academy Connection, including the Scope and Sequence document, FAQs, Data Sheet, PowerPoint Presentation, and Virtual Learning Tools tutorial. If you have questions after reviewing these resources, please contact your country or theater representative for assistance.
